During the American Civil War 1861-1865, soldiers were awakened, called
to meals, retired for the evening and marched into battle all to the
sound of a drum call. Every company had at least one drummer boy and
it was his job to keep the army moving. Tunison’s sculptures of
a U.S.A. Drummer Boy and a C.S.A. Drummer Boy depict young men of about
fourteen years of age. While sculpting the clay figures for casting,
Tunison’s sons posed for him in period clothing holding an authentically
recreated period drum. One son, a drummer and only fourteen, participates
actively in reenactments with the 125th NY Regiment Association as a
Union drummer. The average age of a drummer was a youth to an eighteen
year old and sometimes even older. Civil War drummers received pay of
$12 monthly which was $1 less than an infantry private received. They
were generally excused from fatigue duty and during combat they served
in the rear as stretcher-bearers. Their role was an important and necessary
one in both armies as they faced the same dangers and daily hardships
of their comrades in the infantry.
The authentic period clothing and historical accuracy of these drummers
is a recognized trademark of Tunison sculptures. The detail and realism
in their expression is unrivaled. Each carries the standard issue side
drum of a maple shell, skin head and snares.

“STONEWALL JACKSON, Cedar
Mt.”
by RON TUNISON
Stonewall Jackson riding “Little Sorrell” is
depicted as he rallies his retreating army during the thick of the fighting
at Cedar Mountain on August 9th, 1862. Seizing a battle flag in one hand
and waving his scabbard with the other, the sword too rusted to remove,
he shouts to his men, “Jackson is with you!” A new battle
line is formed and the Union advance is halted thereby helping to win
the battle.
The sculpture measures approx. 14 ¾” in height
including the solid walnut wood base complete with brass plaque engraved
with the title and sculptor Ron Tunison’s name. |

“SOUTHERN CAVALIER”
by RON TUNISON
Flushed with triumph, the peerless Confederate warrior,
J.E.B. Stuart, spurs his horse “Virginia” over the fence in
the vanguard of his charging horsemen. Inspired by their dashing commander,
Stuart’s rebel cavalry seemed invincible, and now, as so often before,
the Yankees would give way before the irresistible audacity of Stuart’s
onslaught.
Flamboyantly attired in his trademark plumed hat, hip length
boots and custom-tailored shell jacket and sash, Stuart was indeed as
one of his men recalled, “a conspicuous personage in every time
of danger.” Whether on scout or raid, or galloping into the thick
of a saber-winging melee, Stuart was the very epitome of the Southern
cavalier. |
